Abstract:
Agriculture is a basic limiting factor for achieving food security in Ethiopia because more
than 80% of the country's population depends on it for its livelihoods. In many part of the
country, frequency and distribution of rain fall, which is the principal source of water for
agricultural crop production, is becoming more unreliable and inadequate with the
occurrence of drought which make irrigation farming more valuable. Irrigation farming also
has both direct and indirect effect on household food security. The purpose of this research
was to analyze the effect of small scale irrigation on rural household food security based on
data collected from 185 sample rural households in Goncha Siso Enesie district Amhara
regional state, Ethiopia. A multi-stage random sampling technique was employed to select
sample households. The combination of analysis such as descriptive analysis, household food
balance model and binary logit regression model were employed to reach sound conclusion
by using data collected from primary and secondary sources. The survey result revealed that
out of all sampled households, 74.1% (137) were food secured while 25.9% (48) were not
food secured. There was high gap in food calorie availability ranges from 753-6659
kcalladult equivalent/day in the study area. Of the 84 irrigation users and 101 non-user
sampled households, 84.5% and 65.3% were food secured respectively. The study found that
education level of household head, household size, farmland size, access to irrigation, access
to credit service, access to extension service and participation in nonfarm activities were the
determinant factors of household food security in the study area. The study also identified
majorproblems associated with small scale irrigation in the study area that are lack of input
supply, lack of water management, lack of efficient marketing system, limited extension
service, less attention and support to establish and strengthen irrigation users association,
decline of selling price at peak harvesting time of irrigation products, water logging and loss
of soil fertility and occurrences of crop pests and diseases. Small scale irrigation has direct
and indirect positive effect on enhancing household's income and food security, which needs
focus for its promotion and improvement from concerned development partners and policy
makers.
