Maize is one of the primary staple food crops in Ethiopia. However, its productivity in the study area in Mecha District is still low mainly due to soil acidity and fertility depletion. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of lime, cattle manure and blended NPSB fertilizer on yield and yield components of maize at Mecha district during the 2019 main rainy season. Factorial combinations of two-level of lime (0 and 2.5 t ha-1); two-level of cattle manure (0 and 10 t ha-1) and five levels of blended NPSB fertilizer (100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kg ha-1) were laid down in randomized complete block design with three replications. Data on phenological, vegetative growth and yield-related parameters of maize were collected timely following their respective standard methods and procedures. All collected data were subjected to analysis of variance using SAS 9.0 software. Mean separation for significant treatments were done by LSD. The results revealed that most of the growth and yield parameters were significantly (p˂0.05) affected by the main and interaction effects of lime, cattle manure (CM) and NPSB fertilizer. Among the agronomic parameters, ear length and biomass yield of maize were significantly affected by the combined effect of lime and NPSB fertilizer. Whereas, kernel number ear-1 and biomass yield were significantly affected by the interaction of lime and CM. The combined applications of lime and NPSB fertilizer, and CM and NPSB fertilizer were highly and very highly significantly affected the grain yield of maize, respectively. The three-way interaction of lime, CM and NPSB fertilizer influenced significantly (P<0.05) and very highly significantly (P<0.001) the plant height and the number of ear plant-1, respectively. The highest (6.24 t ha-1) grain yield of maize was obtained from the combination of 10 t ha-1 CM and 200 kg ha-1 NPSB blended fertilizer, while the lowest grain yield (3.39 t ha-1) was recorded from the application of 100 kg ha-1 blended NPSB fertilizer alone. Although the maximum grain yield was recorded from a combination of 10 t ha-1 CM and 200 kg ha-1 blended fertilizer, the partial budget analysis showed that combined application of 2.5 t ha-1lime, 10 t ha-1CM and 200 kg ha-1 blended fertilizer gave the highest net return of ETB 59,793.23 ha-1 with an acceptable marginal rate of return of 110.7%. Hence, the combined application of 2.5 t ha-1lime, 10 t ha-1CM and 200 kg ha-1 blended fertilizer is economically feasible and can be recommended for Mecha district and similar agro-ecologies. However, as the current experiment was done at a single location and only for one season, multi-locations and several seasons experiment should further be conducted to come up with a workable recommendation.
