Abstract:
Tef production and demand is highly increasing because of its significance role for human nutrition. However, its production and productivity becomes low in Ethiopia. The major reasons for low production and productivity of tef include lack of improved varieties and poor agronomic management practices. In view of this, an experiment was conducted in Mecha district northwestern part of Ethiopia in 2019rainy season to study the effect of seeding rate and variety on growth and yield response of tef on Mecha area. The experiment consisted of four seed rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 kg ha-1) with two varieties (quncho and bosset) having different maturity periods. The treatment was arranged in a factorial arrangement using RCBD with plot size of (3 x 2) m 2having three replication. All collected data (days to 50 % emergence, days to 50% heading, days to 50 % maturity, plant height, spike number, spike length, total number of tiller, total number of effective tiller, above ground dry biomass yield, grain yield and straw yield) from tef were subjected to analysis of variance using SAS version 9.0. The result of the present study showed that almost all the tested phenological, growth and yield components were influenced by variety, seed rate and their interactions (seed rate*variety). The highest grain yield (2501.65 kg ha-1) was recorded on interaction effects of variety quncho with seed rate of 5 kg ha-1. Whereas the lowest grain yield (1411.65 kg ha-1) of tef was recorded at the interaction of variety bosset with seed rate of 20 kg ha-1.The correlation analysis showed that total yield of tef was highly positively correlated with days to 50% emergence, days to 50% heading, days to 50% maturity, plant height, panicle length, panicle number, number of effective tiller, above ground dry biomass yield and straw yield were correlated with number of tillers. Considering the results of the economic analysis, it was thus finally concluded that using of quncho variety with seed rate of 5 kg ha-1 was found the most profitable and was the best recommended for tef productivity in Mecha area However, it is difficult to make any definite conclusion based on the experiment of only one season and location. Hence, the experiment must be repeating on other similar agro ecologies and different years.
