Adoption of tef production technology has paramount importance to increase tef productivity, foster food security, and secure well-being of smallholder farmers’. Without basic descriptive information about institutional, demographic and socio economic determinants of adoption of tef production technology, it is difficult to formulate policies for increasing tef production. Hence, this study aims to identify the determinants of adoption of tef technology packages in Yilmana Densa district, and subsequently assess the factors influencing the intensity of adoption of the technology. In this study, 224-sample households were selected using systematic random sampling techniques. The data were obtained mainly from sampled tef grower households’ via structured interview, and it was supported by key informant interviews. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square, t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Double-hurdle model were employed to analyze the data. First-hurdle of double hurdle model result revealed that adoption decision of tef technology packages were determined via frequency of extension contact, agricultural training, farmers’ perception and farmers’ cooperative membership, positively. The second-hurdle result also shown that adoption intensity of tef technology packages were influenced by frequency of extension contact, agricultural training, demonstration participation and seed multiplication membership, positively, whereas distance to input market and land fragmentation influenced negatively. Farmers perceived that High grain yield and good germination are the most important attributes of improved seed, whereas tolerance to lodging and straw quality is less importance. The finding shows that economic characteristics, institutional characteristics, and farmers’ perception are the most crucial variables determine adoption and intensity of tef production technology. Therefore, efforts to be expected from Ministry of Agriculture, extension agents and other stockholders to enhance adoption level of farmers.
