Abstract:
This paper essentially presents an examination of the effect of organizational culture on
employee commitment in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia in Bahir Dar city. A brief review of the
literature reveals that these concepts studied extensively but the outcomes of various studies are
somewhat inconsistent. The researcher study the effect extent of the variables and their
relationship by using a more inclusive frame of reference, the paper presents a description of
two models that were used as the foundation for the design of a measurement tool to investigate
the topic. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of four organizational culture
traits namely, involvement, consistency, adaptability and mission on employee commitment in
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Bahir Dar city branches, A structured questionnaire was
developed and self-administered to randomly selected employees of Bahir Dar City branches,
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
The results show that the four traits measuring organizational culture were all positively related
with employee’s commitment within the range of r=0.147 to r=0.767. Moreover, adaptability is
the most contributing organizational culture traits in the prediction of employee commitment
with beta value .381. The other three organizational culture traits, in their descending order of
unstandardized coefficients are involvement, consistency, and mission. Furthermore, multiple
regression analysis was used to test if the four dimensions explain employee commitment. The
test result indicated that adaptability culture, involvement culture and consistency culture are
supported are statistically significant predictors of employee commitment while mission culture
doesn’t have significant effect on employee commitment. The organization should create sense of
mission that allows Commercial Bank of Ethiopia in Bahir Dar city to shape current behavior by
envisioning a desired future state.
