dc.description.abstract The main objective of this research was to investigate job related stressors and its effect on employee job performances in public & private commercial banks in Dessie. The study used quantitative research approach and explanatory survey research. The data collected from a sample population of the state owned commercial bank with 3 branches and from 7 private banks (Abay, United, Abyssinia, Wogagen, Dashen, Nib and Bunna international) is included. The sample respondents (203) are chosen by proportional stratified random sampling based on their job type stratum (Clerks, Customer service officer, and Branch managers (supervisors). The study utilized Structured and closed-ended 5 point Likert-scale questionnaires as a data collection instrument. Data analyzed by using both descriptive (frequency, percent, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (correlation and multiple regressions). The result of descriptive analysis indicated that the four stressors; relationship at work, physical environment, work overload and time pressure were scored high mean value. This implies that very high level of work related stress within the public & private commercial banks under investigation. The correlation result shown that stress like relationship at work (r=. 611, P<. 001), physical environment (r=. 391, P<. 001) and time pressure (r=. 350, P<. 001) has a strong relation to employees’ job performance in commercial banks. Moreover, the regression result indicated that stresses such as relationship at work (β=. 533, P<. 001), physical environment (β=. 181, P<. 005), time pressure (β=. 291, P<. 001) and role ambiguity (β=-. 307, P <. 001) have significant influence on employees’ job performance. Furthermore, the finding of regression result revealed that there was a statistically significant positive contribution (R 2 =. 478, F=27.410, P<. 001) of relationship at work, physical environment and time pressure to employees’ job performance. But role ambiguity had a statistically significant negative association to employees’ job performance in public & private commercial banks. This implies that it has an inverse relationship to employees’ job performance.. However, work overload, role conflict and job autonomy have no significant effect on employees’ job performance in public & private banks under investigation. Moreover, job stressors found to be moderately positively related to employees’ job performance in public and private banks (r=. 373, P P<. 001). This implies that up to certain level job stress has a positive influence to enhance employees’ job performance in public & private commercial banks. Therefore, it is recommended that bank managers and owners should give attention to the influence of role ambiguity. Employees’ should have clear information about their responsibilities, expectations, let give them to choose, decides and schedule their work activities. If employees have no freedom, the reverse effect will be a serious problem for the organization performance. Finally, time pressure was found to be significant stressor, so that the managers should consider the other motivation and refreshment mechanisms or shift-work for those employees working longer hours. Otherwise, employees will be exposed to physical and psychological problems. en_US
