Small seeded common bean is an important food security crop; the production of the crop is not common and consistent in most parts of Amhara region, due to limited attention given for the research and development of this crop. Purpose of this study was to assess the genetic variability and association of traits in small seeded common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes. Fourteen quantitative traits including days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, pod length, pods per plant, seeds per pod, seed per plant, hundred seed weight, primary branches per plant, grain yield, biological yield, harvest index, anthracnose and bacterial blight was studied. The experiment was conducted at Mecha district Bahir Dar University research station using 7x7 simple lattice designs planted at main cropping season of 2019. Forty-nine small seeded common bean genotypes obtained from Melkasa Agricultural Research Center was used for the study. The analysis of variance showed the presence of considerable variations among the Forty-nine small seeded common bean genotypes for all the traits. The range and mean values in this study suggested the existence of sufficient variability among the tested genotypes. High heritability obtained for plant height, pod length, pods per plant, hundred seed weight, grain yield and biological yield and anthracnose. High genetic advance obtained for grain yield, biological yield, harvest index, plant height and hundred seed weight. The magnitudes of genotypic correlation were higher as compared to phenotypic correlations and in the same direction. Biological yield, pods per plant, and harvest index are traits of common bean which exerts positive direct and indirect influence on grain yield in both phenotypic and genotypic path coefficient analysis. The first six principal components accounted for 79.18% of the total variation among genotypes. Cluster analysis showed that genotypes were grouped in to four clusters. The result of this study demonstrated that there is considerable variability among the genotypes and further studies on small seeded common bean genotypes with large sample size to get consolidated information that is essential in breeding programs.
