dc.description.abstract Rural household food security interventions can be effectively implemented through in-depth analysis of food security status and its determinants. Food insecurity is essentially more widespread and severe in rural areas than in urban ones. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the status and determinants of household food security in Rural Kallu woreda, Amhara region. Total of 395 households were randomly selected from four rural kebeles. The study employed survey questionnaire, Focus group Discussion (FGD) and Key Informant Interview (KII) data collection methods. As to the method of data analysis, the study employed descriptive statistics (such as mean, frequency, range and percentage) and binary logit model. Consumption expenditure and cost of calories were used to measure food security status and develop food security line, respectively. Accordingly, the food security line was 3989.77ETB per adult equivalent per year and the finding of the study revealed that, in the study area, 47.30% of the sampled households were food insecure. Sixteen explanatory variables were included in the binary logit model to identify the determinants of rural households’ food security status in the study area. Among the explanatory variables included in the model, age of household head and distance from the nearest market showed a significant and negative effect on food security. Whereas household head sex, educational status, off farm income, oxen ownership, credit utilization and improved seed utilization have a positive and significant effect on food security. The results suggest that the governmental and non-governmental organizations should give emphasis to female headed households, strengthening informal education and skill training centers to farming households, expand financial institutions, provide loan (credit), and creating awareness about the purpose of taking credit. Interventions like capacity building, agricultural research, agricultural marketing as well as infrastructures that enhance off farm activities in sustainable manner need to be designed to increase food security in the study area.
