Background: Outpatient therapeutic care program (OTP) of children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) has been decentralized to health post level in Ethiopia since 20082009. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding recovery from SAM and associated factors after its decentralization to health post level. Objectives:To assess recovery outcome and associated factors among under five children with uncomplicated SAM at Farta district health posts. Methods:Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted in OTP records of 385 children treated at health posts retrieved from January 2015 to Decemeber 2017.Population proportion to size (PPS) was used to allocate samplefor each selectedhealthpost. Individual OTP cards of children were selected by systematic random sampling . Data was entered,to EPI INFO version 7 and exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe data.Logistic regression model was used to estimate the effects of each factor on dependent variable.Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was calculated to express thedegree of association.P-valueof<0.05 was considered as test of significance between predictors and outcomes of recovery. Results: A total of 385 children OTP records were reviewed,recovery was 88.6% where as death, defaulters,and weight gain, were 0.5%,4.9%, 4.4 g/kg/day,respectively.Children provided with amoxicillin were 3.1 times higher probability of getting recovered from SAM as compared to their counterparts (AOR=3.1,95% CI(1.48, 6.43)).Children who consumed adequated RUTF were 3.78 times higher possible recovered than those children who consumed inadequate RUTF(AOR=3.78,95% CI (1.55,9.23)).Children whose a length of stay < 6 weeks were 0.31 times less likely to recover than those children ≥ 6 weeks length of stay(AOR= 0.31,95% CI (0.16,0.62)). Conclusions:This study showed that the outcomes of recovery was in acceptable range based on the standerds.Provision of amoxicillin, consumed of adequate RUTF and length of stay were factors identified as significantly associated with recovery of SAM.
