Abstract:
Background: - Malnutrition is a frequent and serious problem in the worlds’ elderly population. Today there is no doubt that malnutrition contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Unfortunately, the concept of malnutrition in the elderly is poorly defined.
Under nutrition in older populations of African countries ranged between 7.6 % in Tanzania to 62.2 % in Ghana for men, and between 2.2% in South Africa to 44.6 % in Ghana for women.
In Ethiopia only few researches under taken, which shows the prevalence of elderly malnutrition is so high in both urban and rural areas of the country. This study had contributed to fill the gap by adding some information on nutrition status of elders 60 years and above aged in Bole sub city, A.A, Ethiopia.
Objective: - The study assessed elders’ nutritional status and associated factors in Bole sub city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2017.
Methodology: -A community based quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on randomly selected 501elders who are found in four woredas of Bole sub city, Addis Ababa.
Result: - On Bole sub city Addis Ababa elders there was “double burden” of over and under nutrition on elders. The Prevalence of total malnutrition (both under nutrition and over nutrition) was so high i.e. 29.2 % of elders were either under nourished (6.2%) or overweight/obese (23.0%).
In Bole sub city being oldest old, being female, having regular “official” medication, too low and so high in family size, lowest income level, and hunger in HH and highest in meal frequency were associated for malnutrition.
Conclusion: - The study concludes that elders in the study area were vulnerable for malnutrition i.e. for both under nutrition and over nutrition/ obesity. The problem of overweight and obesity is so high and emerging with related health problems in the elderly population.
