Abstract:
Background: Healthy diet practice in pregnancy should ensure proper fetal growth, good maternal health and lactation. However, very little evidence exists on the dietary practices and associated factors of pregnant mothers in the study area. Objective: To assess the dietary practices and associated factors of pregnant mothers at Arada sub city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in year of 2017. Methods: An institutional based cross sectional study was conducted from May–June 2017 among 342 pregnant women attended ANC clinics in purposively selected public & private Arada sub city health institutions. The data was collected with Interview using a pre tested structured February 1 to March 30, 2017. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 pertaining to each of the specific objectives & Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results: This finding showed only less than half of the respondents 151(44.2%) were found to have good dietary practice. In the multivariate analysis reported, knowledge level of pregnant women AOR= 2.399 (1.132, 5.084), a positive attitude of a respondent (AOR= 7.308 (3.209, 16.640) and promoting the wife decision makers for the requirements of food expenses at home (AOR=5.052 (1.343, 19.008) towards dietary practice during pregnancy were significant positive association with good dietary practice while the occurrence of aversion were inversely associated (AOR= 0.339 (0.164, 0.702). Conclusion and recommendation: The dietary practice among the study pregnant women is low as compared to guideline. Therefore, the concerned bodies should focus and/or intervene to empower women for expense of diet costs at home, help the pregnant mother how to cop up aversion, scale up knowledge & positive attitude to have good dietary practices of pregnant mothers during pregnancy in the study area.
