Introduction: - Stunting remains a problem of greater magnitude than underweight or wasting, and it more accurately reflects nutritional deficiencies and illness that occur during the most critical periods for growth and development in early life. Most studies indicated that stunting is associated with low socio-economic status, low educational level of parents, poor water supply and sanitation, and high infectious diseases burden. Stunting is one of the most important public health problems in Ethiopia. Objective:-The study was aimed to assess stunting and associated factors among children of age 6-59 months in Wogera woreda, North Gonder Zone, Amhara region, Ethiopia. Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted from May to June 2018 in Wogera woreda, North Gonder Zone, Amhara region, Ethiopia. Anthropometric measurement was used for data collection. 422 children with mother pairs were taken by measuring all children of age 6-59 month. A structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to collect in the community. EPI DATA version 7 for data entry and SPSS version 23 for data analysis was used. WHO Anthro software version 2 2007 was used to calculate HAZ score of individuals for assessing growth of children. Binary logistic regressions was also be used to control confounders. P-value of <95% and AOR was used to describe the significantly associated factors. Result In the study, over all prevalence of stunting was 46.9% (42.4%-51.9%; 95%CI) among children 6-59 month of age. Male children AOR=2.66;95%CI;1.41,5.03), whose mothers had no education (AOR=33.19;95%CI;6.03,182.77), age complementary feed started before and after 6 months of age AOR=20.00;95%CI;10.20, 39.21) and initiation of breast feeding after 24 hours AOR=.28;95%CI;.10,.80) and children initiated within 24 hours AOR=.29;95%CI;.10, .81)were more likely to be stunted. Conclusion; Stunting was a highly prevalent problem ¡n the study area. Child’s sex, Mother’s education and age complementary feed started were found to be associated factors of stunting. There is need for linking nutrition interventions and social protection program.in Wogera district.
