Abstract:
Background: Nutrition education for diabetes patients is the responsibility of dieticians and /or nutritionist; nurses have an important role to play. Their role in the multidisciplinary team is very crucial due to their regular contact with the diabetes patient. In the setting, nurses are always available to patients 24 h per day, making them more easily accessible to patients compared to other members of the healthcare team.
Objectives; This study was designed to assess the level of knowledge, attitude, practice, and associated factors towards nutritional management of diabetes among nurses working in public and private hospitals, in Bahir Dar, Northwest Ethiopia.
Method: Institutional based cross sectional study was conducted on 214 nurses with a response rate of 100%, from June 1st to 30 th, 2018 G.C. The data were collected through self administered questioner and analyzed using SPSS version 20 computer software package. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize socio demographic characteristics of study participants. Knowledge, Attitude and Practice towards nutritional management of diabetes was determined by using the mean. Logistic regression were used to Identify factors associated with outcome variables and the p-value for statically significant being set at <0.05. Result: Most of the respondents were females n=148(69.2%) and males n=66(30.8%). In this study, 106 (49.5%) of nurses were knowledgeable and 108 (50.5%) of nurse were less knowledgeable, 114(53.3%) of nurse had favorable attitude and 100 (46.7%) of nurse had unfavorable attitude. 142 (66.4%) of nurse had good practice and 72 (33.6%) of nurse had bad practice towards nutritional management of diabetes. Attitude had significant association with practice at p value less than 0.05. The rest socio demographic characteristics had no significant association with practice. Conclusion; Lack of nurses’ knowledge towards nutritional management of diabetes is one of the main problems identified. Review of medical curriculum to incorporate clinical nutrition topics, continuous in service trainings for nurses in each hospital, department would improve nurses knowledge, attitude and practice towards nutritional management of diabetes.
