The aim of this study was to examine the practice of investigative reporting in the state-owned newspaper, Bekur. Specifically, the study was conducted to examine whether the “investigative articles” fulfill the characteristics of investigative reporting, to explain the understanding of Bekur newspaper journalists to investigative journalism, and to identify the focal areas of Bekur newspaper investigative news articles and to figure out the challenges facing the practitioners and the practice itself. To achieve these objectives, qualitative research method was employed. The data gathering tools used for this study were in-depth interview and document analysis. In order to gather data from journalists and editors, from eight media practitioners, the researcher used purposive sampling techniques. Beside eight sample articles were analyzed thematically. The study used agenda setting role of the media and watchdog model of journalism as theoretical frame works. The findings indicated that “investigative news articles” in Bekur newspaper didn’t contain some characteristics of investigative reporting. It entertains public interest issues, tried to reveal hidden truth and some intentions of keeping originality. However, it lacks depth, follow-up reports, and follow steps of investigation. In addition, the commitment of journalists to investigate is not as the expected level. The journalists in Bekur newspaper understand what investigative journalism means. They define its meaning and identify its characteristics as the same as scholars definitions. The media practitioners have faced a lot of challenges that force them not to practice investigative reporting as expected. The fear of the media organization and journalists, intervention of officials, less legal protection, the political affiliations of media leaders, and the intensive capital need for applying investigative reporting are some of the challenges that investigative journalists and the practice are facing. In addition to this, lack of proper information and unwillingness of officials to present themselves in the investigative articles are challenges of the practice of investigative report. There are some little investigations in the selected newspaper, but the findings have identified no investigations regarding political scandals, corruptions and human rights violations. The attention given for investigative reporting in Bekur newspaper is poor. No investigative team and column designed for investigative journalism. Because of this the practice of an investigative reporting is at its very infant stage. The practices are seen as simple cross-checking. The investigative news articles didn’t fulfill the standards of investigative reporting.
