FACTORS DETERMING RURAL WOMEN’S HOUSEHOLD INCOME AND BENEFIT GAINED FROM SMALL SCALE-IRRIGATION: THE CASE OF MEKET WOREDA, AMHARA NATIONAL REGIONAL STAT

dc.description.abstract Small-scale irrigation improves agricultural production and increases the income for rural women households. However, its factors determing are not well documented due to limited attention for a high potential income and gaine benefits from small-scale irrigation on rural women’s households. The general objective of this study was to assess the factors determing rural women household income and benefit gained from small scale-irrigation in Meket Woreda. concurrent mixed method research design was employed for data collection and data analysis. The survey questionnaires were collected from 240 sampled women selected using systematic random sampling techniques from 3 kebeles of the study area. Qualitative data was collected from nine key informants, eighteen/18/ focus group discussants and observation and the data were analyzed thematically. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data. Multiple linear regression model was employed to determine the factors of small –scale irrigation farm on rural women household income in the study area. The study finding showed that the annual net incomes of all sources for irrigator and non-irrigator rural women households in Ethiopian Birr (ETB) 9383.33 and 5038.157, respectively. The result of MLR model showed that as total family members, read and write educational categories, water source distance in meters, irrigation farming experience in year, access to market information, access to formal credit, total income from livestock and livestock production, total income from crop production and non-farm income were significantly predicted variables for the dependent variable on rural women households’ income. While livelihood improvement, crop diversification, higher yield, and gender equality were existing benefits for rural women household from small-scale irrigation. It was concluded that factors determing rural women’s household income and benefit gained from small scaleirrigation to increase agricultural production and improve women’s household income,and gain benefits from small-scale irrigation. Finally, the study recommended that agricultural inputs like pesticides, seeds, herbicides should be accessible to women farmers as well as improve marketing conditions and marketing chains, water supply should also be given due attention by the government to enhance women household incomes.
