dc.description.sponsorship The current study was conducted with the objective of designing and developing appropriate shoe for rural people around Bahir Dar city. Tire sandals are footwear staple in most of rural people in the Bahir Dar area, because of availability of used tire, recycled rubber soles and low cost of production. The study was carried out through questionnaire survey and observational study. The collected data showed that tire sandals are not comfortable for their feet, due to rough surface of tire straps ant caused a foot crack around their forepart and heel area. More specifically, tire sandals are heavy in weight and the straps frequently tend to break at the connecting points, due to poor nail attachment of upper and straps. The researcher designed and developed four appropriate shoe collections that fulfilled target users requirement by considering shoemaking standards, comfort, durability, aesthetic appearance, fitting, cost and market. The collections are made from cow hide upper having synthetic leather edge, tire sole and adhesive and thread are used for upper and sole attachment. Fitting test and target group response showed that the collections are inexpensive, attractive design, strong sole and upper attachment, light weight and breathable upper. The target groups are very happy, and eager to use the collections. This result shows that new shoe collections can reduce foot crack problem, the designs increase preference of target group and will create a job opportunity for shoe producers. en_US
