Abstract
This study sets out to investigate the contribution of Safety Net Program in Poverty reduction with
particular focus on the Kebribayah Woreda, Ethiopian Somali Regional State. A sample of 114
households was selected from four kebeles out of 32 kebeles in the Woreda. All selected individuals were
among the beneficiaries of the program. Enumerators collected the data with the close coordination of
the researcher. The questionnaires were prepared in the form of closed ended questions and likert scale
to answer the basic questions for the objective study. In addition to that, interviews and focus group
discussions from community elders, Kebele Administrators, woreda and Development Agents (Das).
Hence after, the collected data was analyzed using the frequencies, percentage, and descriptive statistics
by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study also exhaustively utilized the existing
literature in order to broaden the validity and reliability of the study. The study found that people among
the households who are engaged in the PSNP are in their productive age predominantly between 30-40
years of age. The study found that the program contributed household food security by allowing them to
get food from their community work. The program also prevented depletion of livestock among benefited
household and according the FGD there is clear indication that after joining the program many
households experienced increased livestock. The program also increased access to social infrastructure
among the surveyed households through construction of birka, Gully rehabilitation; construction of check
dams, Soil and stone band construction have been practiced through public work. |
