ABSTRACT
In agricultural production, the pulses take the second share among grain crops, of which chickpea is the major ones. To increase production and productivity of crops the use of improved seeds is one of the most important factor among the others. In the study area, use of improved chickpea seeds by smallholder farmers remains low. Therefore, this study is aimed at analyzing determinants in chickpea seed value chain in the study area. To achieve this objective, a multi stage sampling technique was employed and 140 sampled households were randomly selected. In addition, 15 key informants were selected purposively. Furthermore, necessary data was collected from primary and secondary sources through semi-structured interview and review of necessary materials. These data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression model. Further, household constraints were analyzed by using Henry Garrett’s ranking technique. In chickpea seed value chain, the dominant actors are service providers. Its seed system is dominated by informal one, because the major seed source is own saved seed. The results of binary logistic regression model showed that most of the parameters analyzed ( seed cost, DA contact, market price, access to seed, market distance, access to potential land and participation in field visit) are statistically significant (P<0.01and P<0.1). Among the constraints noted in the study; higher price of seed (65), higher price of chemicals (64.28), delays in supply of improved seed (64), shortage of capital (60.46), shortage of improved seeds (58), and infestation of diseases (56.36) in average values are the major ones. The study concluded that the utilization status of improved chickpea seed by small holder farmers is determined by timely supply of improved seeds, and availability and price of improved seeds. Therefore, strong effort and commitment is required to strengthen the linkages among actors; linkages between research, extension and seed producers.
