Abstract:
This study was conducted to compare the quality of teaching physical education between the government and private secondary and preparatory schools in Dessie Administration City. Cross-sectional survey study design was employed. The populations in the study were 379 students using Rayan formula (2013), 18 physical education teacher, 5 school principals, 5 sport club coordinator, 3 supervisors respondents were involved totally 410 who were participated as the population of the study. The questionnaires were prepared for students and Physical Education teachers. The data obtained from quantitative data were analyzed using percentage, mean scores, standard deviations, and independent sample t-test by using SPSS version 20. While the data obtained through interview and observations were analyzed through narration and explanations. The results of the research indicate quality of teaching PE is better employed in the private secondary schools than government schools; private school administration treats all subjects and the subject teachers equally and encourages PE teachers; Students’ with disabilities are less support and encouragement; large class size; no intramural activity; Supervision is not properly practiced in government schools; budget allotted to purchase sport materials was found low at government schools; and shortage of facility and equipment in both private and government schools concludes that teaching learning process private school was better at pedagogy, concludes that the private schools more quality indicators were fulfilled and employed than government schools. In light of finding address by the researcher the recommendations forwarded to fill the existing gap both schools concerning quality of teaching physical education.
