dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to analyze the contributions of IFAE program in empowering women in Bahir Dar City. The study was guided by social constructivist paradigm and employed qualitative case study design. Women, graduated from the program, facilitators and adult education experts participated in the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the first two women and chain sampling was used to select the remaining 11 women for interview and seven women for focus group discussion. Purposive sampling was also employed to select one IFAE experts in City Administration. In order to select two facilitators and one IFAE expert from Sub City, comprehensive sampling technique was used. Data were gathered through interview, focus group discussion and document review. The inductive approach with iterative steps was used to analyze and make sense of the data. The finding showed that though the women perceived the program as invalid in the beginning, they changed their perception even considered it as invaluable when they go through the program and started to see its benefits. The study also showed improvement of women lives through IFAE program by accessing resources that are preconditions for empowerment. However, the accessed resources though found to be important, are not sufficient to achieve empowerment, which exposed the women to workloads and burdens. This study also found that women participated in this educational program improved in exercising agency in their day-to-day activities. Nevertheless, their exercising agency was limited and could not enable them decide on determinant issues which transforms their previous denied lives. The study finding revealed that the women lived a life neither impoverished nor valued by the societies they belonged. Hence, though women lives have been improved through IFAE program, they are not empowered. The finding of this study showed that women participants‘ empowerment has been challenged by economic problem and lack of sufficient time, obsolete political attention, and lack of support and coordination among concerned bodies, awareness problem, husband influence and societies discouraging attitude. Based on the findings, implication and future research direction have been forwarded. en_US
