Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess the current status of leadership in north shoa zone sport organizations. To this end, descriptive survey design was used in this study. Primary data were gathered from (8) sport leaders, (38) employees, (10) department heads, (78) sport trainees and (13) amateurs, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, i.e. percentiles and frequency with the help of SPSS version 20. Additionally, qualitative data were collected from sport leaders through interview, and from amateurs through FGD. Qualitative data were analyzed after the responses were transcribed using respondents’ own words and categorized in to various themes. It was found out that effectiveness of sport leaders’, in setting and achieving goals and showing professional endeavors in inspiring employees do their work enthusiastically was below the desired level. The study further revealed that shortage of resources and more engagement on routine works that had less value to the sport organization’ vision and mission were some of the main problem hindering sport’ leadership effectiveness for the better performance of sport organization. Accordingly, it is concluded that almost all of the sport leaders currently were not effectively leading core activities of their sport organization by forming communal cooperation among the staff within the sport organization on one hand, and collaboration between the staff of the sport organization and the community outside the sport organization on the other hand .In addition to this most of the sport leaders are political nominees which are not graduated in the field of sport science and focused more on the political duties which pullback the performance of the sport organization. Finally, it is recommended that the one who lead sport organization should be a person who qualified in the field of sport science or sport management, , the responsible parties including Amhara regional state of youth and sport biro(ARSYSB) are advised to fill the knowledge and skill gaps of the woreda and zone sport leaders by designing and providing short and long term professional training on: communication skill, strategic sport leadership, effective cooperative and collaborative sport leadership
