Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to examine the major challenges and its practice of managing sport events in Awi Administrative zone youth and sport office. It was focused on Ankesha Woreda, Dangila Administrative town, Chagni Administrative town, and Awi zone Youth and Sport organization. The design of the study was descriptive survey method. Accordingly, with the confidence interval of 4.48, the researcher selected 169 (11.16%) subjects by using a variety of sampling techniques. The actual samples were 32 (38.55%) youth and sport office experts, 44 (40.74 %) members of federations of football, volleyball and athletics are selected using judgmental sampling. Moreover, 6 (8.57 %) Referees, 6 (18.18 %) sport team coordinators, 12 (36.36 %) team leaders, 15 (17.04 %) coaches, and 54 (5.98 %) athletes are selected using stratified random sampling. Interview, questionnaire, observation and document analysis were employed to gather data. Quantitative data key in to SPSS (v.20) software and frequency, mean, standard deviation, percentile, and correlations used for Likert scale value. The qualitative data was thematically arranged, interpreted and triangulated with the quantitative data. Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively and reported as mean ± Standard Deviation. The findings showed that sport events managing processes is executing at an average level (m=3.01 ± 1.05), (64.35 %) of members of federations, committees and event organizers have more than 2 years’ of experience in sport managing process, Sport events were properly planned (m=4.22±0.71), documentation and record was effective (m=3.21±1.14), but their implementation were not satisfied (2.74±0.99). Event management, event planning and human resource management have significant positive correlation. The major challenges of sport events management processes were unsatisfactory crowd management (m=2.97±1.08), below average events operations (m=2.98±1.05), shortage of facilities and equipment (m=3.35±0.83), poor sponsors participation. Effects of sport event management were budget and facilities extravagancy, short recovery time to athletes, performance and psychological influence on athletes, disappointing on decisions, and athletes’ selection to represent zone negatively affected. To provide better event management, youth and Sport offices should raise public participation, and facilitate trainings, workshops, and technical support for sport event organizers and managers of athletics, football and volleyball even
