Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to identify the factors that affect student-athletes'
success in long distance running event: in the case of Womberima Woreda athletics
·projects. To do this a descriptive survey design was conducted. In this study 60 student
athletes, 4 coaches and 6 Womberima sport office officers were participated by using
available (comprehensive) sampling. Besides this, adequate amount of data were
collected by using multiple data collection tools. Predominantly questionnaires were
used as a major data collection instruments. However, in order to assure the validity of
the data that obtained from questionnaire triangulation method was applied by using
semi-structured interviews and none-participatory observation. The data that was
obtained from questionnaires were analyzed in the form of mean, standard deviation and
one sample tests were conducted to see the significance level. Interview and observation
were anaiyzed qualitatively. The findings revealed that student-athletes were not
successful in long distance running event. Coaches did not follow principle of training,
which are appropriate for long distance running event and it was significantly affect
success. Student-athletes did not eqrn the necessary equipments, facilities and supports
from the project and it was significantly affect success. Student-athletes' have not special

dieting program to replace the lost calorie and it was significantly affect success. There
were also additional major factors that affect student-athletes success in long distance
, .. running event. In conclusion, the study shows that there were problems to be successful
an:zong student-athletes' in long distance running event. Therefore, to reduce the
encountered problems recommendations were suggested by the researcher. Finally, the
researcher would like to recommend other concerned and interested individuals to
carryout deeper and wider research work in this issue, the factors that affect student
athletes' success in long distance running event.
