Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis work was to analyze the content~ of grade 8
physics textbook prepared by the Amhara Education Bureau in the year
2006. It was conducted realizing the fact that the new education and
training policy demands textbooks to be reviewed per 5 years. Samples
were taken from different parts of the textbook; Objectives in the
minimum-learning competency guides and curriculum guides and
activities in the textbook were assessed. Questionnaires were
administered to samples of grade 8 students and their teachers from
general elementary schools oflnjibara Town Administration. Quantitative
analysis technique and calculating index of student involvement were
employed for samples of the textbook whereas comparison of the
objectives with the action verbs used to indicate the behavior expected of
students. The responses from the questionnaires were analyzed by using
percentages. Besides teachers and students open-ended comments were
analyzed. The results re~ealed that the objectives in the guides and the
activities in the textbook showed inconsistency. With regard to
quantitative analysis, the different aspects of the textbook such as text
narratives, figures and diagrams, end-of-unit questions and summaries,
and activities failed to engage students' and teachers' for active student
learning. Even though activities are missed from units 6 and 7, the

does not mean the activities energize students for active learning

environment. Generally, summaries, questions, and figures and diagrams
found were to be discouraging for active learning environments.
