ABSTRACT
In this study less complex and an environmental friendly process for the synthesis of
antimicrobial silver nanoparticles using extracts of brassica oleracea var. capitata leaves is
reported. UV-Vis spectroscopy absorption spectra indicated the formation and stability
of silver
nanoparticles. The absorption spectra
of silver nanoparticle colloidal solution showed maximum
absorption wavelength at 434 nm. The functional groups in the extract which are possibly
responsible for the reduction
of silver ion into silver nanoparticles were indicated by FTIR
spectra. Silver nanoparticle sizes measured using Mie theory via UV-Vis absorption spectra
showed that the average diameter in colloidal solution is about 10.8
± 0.04 nm. The synthesized
silver nanoparticles were effective in controlling the growth
of human pathogens such as E.coli,
S. aureus and P. aeruginosa with an average inhibition zone range from 8.5 mm to 12 rnrn. This
study also revealed that aqueous extract
of white cabbage leaves is capable of producing silver·. t,.,.
nanoparticles that are stable for 2 days at room temperature without any sign ofprecipitation.
