dc.description.abstract Sport is one of the main issues which frequently reported in our country newspapers. But, researches r? concerning sports coverage on newspapers are limited. This study was intended to analyse contents and patterns of contraction of sports coverage in Addis Admas and Addis Zemen newspapers and to identify possible influence on the sports coverage. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. Through purposive sampling method, five and half month publications of the two newspapers sports pages published between 16 February and 4 July, 2013 were samples of the study. • • The content «nalysis was made based on the types of sports reported on the two newspapers sports page, the theme of i!re article, gender representations, identification of individuals or team, geographical focus and, the number and types of sources used in sport reporting. Then, interviews were conducted with the two newspapers sport journalists. The quantitative findings demonst~ated that soccer, game issues, sportsmen, international level sports and their related issues were dominantly reported in the sports coverage. Apart from soccer and athletics, other sports got little attentton. Both newspapers also gave scant coverage to political, social and economic aspects of sports as well as issues related to sports facilities. Similarly, sportswomen and amateurs sports \eceived limited coverage. In relation to the use of sources, the results indicated that most of the sport ' stories in the newspapers were published without any sources or only with one source. In addition, stories sourced from three or more sources were fewer. Further, both newspapers used media as a major source of information. People outside the sport world were referred rarely as a source. In short, the study .. revealed the limitations of both newspapers in covering varieties of sporting issues. The data from the interview revealed the lack of well-stated guiding principle, financial constraints and traditional way of sport reporting have a negative impact on both newspapers to address different sporting issues. en_US
