Abstract:

In this-study. an al/empt has been made to investigate the implementation of group work al I lossanu
college of Teacher Education. To explore the issue, literature on group work and its implementation has
been profoundly reviewed. To gather information, three instruments (interview, questionnaire and
classroom observation) were employed. Data was gatheredfrom teachers and students. In selecting the
samples. teachers were _selected by purpusive sampling techniques and the students by using stratified
random sampling (based on sex and batch). Therefore, the participants included were three Biology

instructors and 62 students (40 female and 22male students). Accordingly, six classroom observations
were made and. In ·,he description and analysis of the data obtained through the instruments quantitative
research method was applied The results of the study show that teachers do not pay more a/lent ion for
their roles at the beginning of group work. Setting groups based on students' ability, background, and
interest has not become practical by the majority of instructors. They organize groups only on their
sit4 has is. In addition almost all teachers did not assign roles for each group member and they-did not
allot enough time for their students. Concerning teachers monitoring group discussion, instructors did
not motivate all students to participate in group discussion In Moving out of group activity the
instructors did not assess individuals performance in a group. Student response and result of classroom
observations show that there was no feedback on the strengths and/or weaknesses ofgroup performance
and also t!1ere was no opportunity for students to comment each other. Based on the results of the study
and conclusions drawn, the recommendations were forwarded to improve the implementation of group
work in the coflege under study.
