dc.description.abstract The main purpose of the study was primarily to develop professional capacity of teachers considering the advancement of students learning. Hence, this study is intended to identify the practices instructional supervision in general and preparatory in general and preparatory secondary schools of south wollo. The study also attempted to seek ways and means of alleviating the problems and establish an improved system of instructional supervision which would address the educational goals. The researcher has made a brief review of related • literature and cited experiences of some countries. Using the descriptive survey method, the data . ABSTRACT was collected from respondents through questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. Then_; 127 teachers 22 principals 11 Supervisors 6 woreda Education office experts 3 zone education d:partment experts, a total of 169 respondents were involved in this study. The app~riate sampling techniques used were simple random, Proportional stra~ified and purposive sampling. To conduct this study statistical tools like percentage, average mean, and t­ test were utilized to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that general and preparatory school supervisors did not perform their roles and functions efficiently, supervisors •- were ineffective to posses a broad knowledge and skills, the practice of supervisors were more of controlling rather than supporting, the task of supervisor such as instructional, curriculum and professional improvement was not found to be encouraging. The perception of respondents regarding supervisors' instructional efficiency appeared to have developed a negative attitude. The major reasons for the ineffectiveness of supervisors were placed on the lack of the training for the jobs. Hence, to solve the problems stated in the findings, supervisors need to possess broad knowledge skills and techniques to assist teachers in the improvement of instruction by offering short and long term trainings. Further investigation need to be carried out, regarding the problems that hinder supervisors instructional efficiency towards maximizing teachers. professional abilities to improve the over all students performance in their learning en_US
