| dc.description.abstract | Twenty (20) Desi and Kabuli chickpea varieties were evaluated using RCBD design with three replications across six environments (three locations i.e. Adet, Debre Ziet and Fogera, and two seasons i.e 2021/22 and 2022/23). Additive main effects and multiplicative interactions (AMMI) analysis point out that the Desi chickpea varieties Teketay (2225.6 kgha ) followed by Natoli (2004.9 kgha 1 -1 ). Similarly, Koka (2257.1 kgha -1 -1 ) followed by Shasho (1798.59 kgha ) from Kabuli, were found to be stable across all environments. In addition, ten (10) improved chickpea varieties of Desi and Kabuli were planted using the mother and baby trial at Adet and Fogera station, and farmers' fields. Farmers at Adet station Senkengha Kebele chose the varieties Geletu, Teketay, and Dalota in Desi, and Koka, Hora, and Ejere in Kabuli. Farmers at Mousobo Kebele selected Koka, Dhera, and Hora from the Kabuli as the best varieties. At Fogera station Farmers have chosen, Geletu, Teketay, and Dalota in Desi, and local check (Shasho) followed by Koka and Ejere in Kabuli. Moreover, twenty-eight (28) chickpea varieties (13Desi and 15Kabuli) were used to assess the genetic gain achieved over the last four decades. The analysis showed a genetic gain in seed yield of about 33.44 kgha -1 year -1 (P≤0.01, R =0.44) and 7.9 kgha -1 year -1 (P≥0.05, R 2 =0.021) for Desi and Kabuli chickpea varieties in that order. Besides, 0.24g year -1 (P≤0.05, R 2 =0.27) and 0.36g year -1 (P≤0.01, R 2 =0.21) hundred-seed weight for Desi and Kabuli chickpea varieties, respectively. 2 - | en_US |
