Abstract:
Faecal Sludge Management(FSM) is the storage, collection, transport, treatment and safe end use or disposal of feacal sludge(FS).Improperly managed of FS; it can affect the health of the public and the ecosystem.There is limited information on the performance of FSTP and the possible safe disposal and reuse options of the dried sludge of Finoteselam Twon FSTP.This study aims to evaluate the performance,the quality of effluents and possible application of dried Sludge of Finote Selam Town faecal sludge treatment plant.Samples were collected during dry season for April,2023, May ,2023 and Januaruy,2024 and wet season for June,2023, July 7,2023 and July 28,2023.The study employed Feacal sludge treatment plant dry sludge municipal solid waste and the co-compost and all of the liquid and solid sample were collected for analysis of total of physicochemical and biological parameters that include pH,T°,EC,DO,TDS and moisture contents at the field, while TSS,NH4,NO3,TP,TKN,Cu,Zn,Cr,BOD5,TOC,TC and FC tested at the laboratory. Data analysis was performed using SPSS Descriptive Statistics.Results obtained from the lab showed the removal efficiencies of the main indicator parameters of Feacal Sludge Treatment Plant for the dry and wet seasons of treatments, respectively, as follows: BOD(75.61%,71.75%),TSS(85.89%,91.15%),TP(50.14%,62.84%),TKN(85.26%,89.17%),FC(66.29%, 64.57%), and TC (67.75%, 65.53%),value obtained indicated a highly significant difference between the influent and effluents of both seasons. The characteristics of effluent in Finoteselam Town FSTP T°, pH, EC, NO3, NH4, Cr, Zn and Cu were between the limits and TSS, TDS, DO, BOD, TP.TKN, TC and FC were out of the limits.The physicochemical and biological properties of dried sludge were TP (84.6%, 66.56%,) TKN (4.22%, 2.11%), TOC (32.29%, 31.22%) for Dry season and wet season respectively and Municipal solid waste value was TP (83.36%,63.44%), TKN (3.6%,1.91%), TOC (31.10%,31.04%), for Dry season and wet season respectively.The characterized of co-compost and the standard values of TP 70.07± 0.26% & 51.77± 0.52%,TKN 2.89± 0.27% & 0.56± 0.08%,TOC 17.94± 0.72% & 12.15± 0.49% and Moisture content during the composting process 69.26±0.75 & 65.55±0.57 in dry and wet season respectively.Depending on the parameter values of co-compost in finoteselam are use for agricultural application. The performance evaluation of the feacal sludge treatment plant reveals that the plant did not perform up to the expected standards.Therefore, it is advisable to consider implementing advanced treatment technologies such as anaerobic digestion, membrane filtration, and wetland.
