In Ethiopia’s rural area, inadequate storage facilities continue to cause great post-harvest losses in vegetables. This project deals with the Modeling of an automated control system to improve vegetable storage techniques, herein proposed for Ethiopian rural regions and powered by solar energy. This system consists of DHT22 sensor, Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller, actuators such as fan, humidifier and Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) provides the means for real-time adjustable control of the system. Control strategies were designed in order to control the operation of ventilation and humidity of storage structures using Arduino IDE and MATLAB. Simulations on computers and testing on the hardware prototype established that the system was able to achieve and maintain a temperature of 0°C and a humidity range of 85-95% facilitating the storage of vegetables for longer periods while minimizing wastage of food. The adaptive fuzzy logic control guarantees making changes to the storage adjustments accurately and reliably irrespective of the outside conditions. The need for temperature and relative humidity control in the post-harvest handling of vegetables was very important therefore this presents a viable solution for controlling post-harvest losses. It was suggested that the system be developed for larger storage spaces, the energy consumption should be minimized and the control methods should be developed for other purposes over time.
