Abstract:
All life depends on water being the main source is river waters, but give less attention to river
water quality, especially in developing countries like Ethiopia. This study was conducted to
assess the impact of industrial and municipal effluents from areas around Bahir Dar city.
Physico-chemical parameters of the effluents were analyzed during two seasons; dry (April) and
wet (June); 2024. According to the results, higher mean temperature was observed dry season
than wet season (24.77±0.12, and 20.45±2.37; respt). Mean pH vales almost remained uniform in
dry and wet seasons (7.64±0.50 and 7.40±0.41; respt.); however, pH of sites 7 and 6 effluents
was high compared to other sites. The electrical conductivity mean result was high in dry season
than in wet season (2256.18±3566.23 and 2066.85±3489.23 μS/cm; respt.) and both of results
are above the limit of Ethiopia EPA. Site 7 exhibits the highest EC values in both seasons. TSS
(mg/L) was 396.14±168.2 for dry season and 206.78±131.3 for wet season. Sites 4 and 7
exhibited high TSS values in both seasons. TDS (mg/L) was 1047.6±1572 for dry season and
1156±1867 for wet season. Site 7 exhibited the highest TDS value in both seasons. DO (mg/L)
was higher in dry season than wet season (4.48±2.26 and 3.89 ± 1.71; respt.). Nitrate (mg/L) was
8.13±8.5 in dry season and 7.66±7.7 in wet season. Sulfate (mg/L) was 200.04±274.24 in the dry
season and 243.20 ± 250.64 in the wet season. Phosphate (mg/L) was 2.79±1.52 in the dry
season to 2.7±1.7 wet season. TP (mg/L)(14.24±7.7 in dry season to 14.02±7.6 mg/L in wet
season), COD (mg/L) (374.99±289.99 in dry season and 335.83±349.09 in wet season). BOD
(mg/L) (64.82±25.55 in dry season and 60.98±16.54 in wet season). Similar analysis of heavy
metals (Cr, Mn, Fe and Cu) was also performed in this study. Generally, the results of this study
showed that the tannery industry (site 7) had high content of almost all parameters studied: TDS
value of 4950±15.3 mg/L in the dry season and 4576.667± 36 in the wet season as the same for
EC, TDS, COD, BOD, DO, NO3

, TP, and Cr when compared to the Ethiopian
EPA. Like tannery industry sites 4 and 6, most parameters were above the Ethiopian EPA. At
other sites, most parameters are within the Ethiopian EPA standard. Therefore, industrial
wastewater and municipal wastewater must be treated before being discharged to the Nile River
to prevent the impact of pollution on this environment.
