This work presents Synthesis, characterization and biological investigation of new mixed complexes of zinc
(II) metal containing resorcinolate ligands. The synthesized complex was characterized by different
analytical and spectroscopic techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared
spectrometry (FTIR), chloride determination, Thermo gravimetric (TG) analysis, melting point
determination, pH, solubility tests and molar conductivity. From ligand and metal estimation data the
stoichiometry of the complexes was found to be 4:1 (ligand: metal) having the general formula
Na
2
[Zn(HR)
] with a tetrahedral geometry. Based on the analytical and the complex was evaluated for its
biological activity on two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis )
and two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae). It was found biologically
active on the Gram-positive bacteria but showed no activity against the Gram negative ones. This complex
showed better activity compared to the ligand but lower than the salt and the reference. Therefore, this
complex could be used as an antibacterial agent against the tested Gram-positive bacteria after cytotoxicity
investigations.
