Abstract:
This study was conducted in Mayteklet natural forest, Adiarkay district, North Gondar Zone,
Amhara Regional State, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the species composition,
structure, and regeneration status within this ecosystem. A five transect line sampling approach
was employed, establishing 43 plots measuring 20 m x 20 m and 5 smaller subplots measuring 5
m x 5 m, thoroughly documenting the diversity of plant species. A total of 83 woody species
belonging to 33 families and 58 genera were recorded, with Fabaceae and Moraceae identified
as the most dominant families. Cluster analysis using R software revealed the presence of five
community types in the Mayteklet natural forest. The density of mature woody plant individuals
was found to be 2,460 stems per hectare, while sapling and seedling densities were 3,211 and
4,330 stems per hectare, respectively. The total basal area of the forest was calculated to be 41.5
m²/ha, providing insights into the overall biomass and productivity of the ecosystem.
Regeneration data suggested that the Mayteklet natural forest is currently in good regeneration
status overall; however, some species with low Importance Value Index (IVI) and limited or
absent seedling presence may be at risk of local decline. Based on these findings, it is
recommended that responsible authorities design and implement appropriate conservation
strategies to address the needs of these vulnerable species, ensuring the long-term ecological
integrity of the Mayteklet natural forest.
