Ficus sycomorus (Bamba) is one of the most versatile medicinal plants having a wide spectrum of biological activity due to the presence of large number of bioactive compounds. The present study is conducted to evaluate phytochemical test, in vtro antimicrobial activity, antioxidant efficiency, total phenolic and using the methanol, chloroform and petroleum ether extracts. The plant part was collected from North Wollo Zone Lalibela district around Bugna Woreda Meri River and air dried. Qualitative phytochemical screenings were also conducted using methanol, chloroform and petroleum ether extracts, which revealed the presence of glycosides, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, quinone, terpenoids and alkaloids. The in vitro antibacterial activity of leaf extract of Ficus sycomorus was performed against four bacterial species S. aureus, E coli, s. pyrogens, K. pneumonia, at concentrations of 500 mg/mL, 250 mg/mL, 125 mg/mL and 62.5 mg/mL. The result revealed that the methanol and chloroform extracts showed a better activity all disease causing pathogens bacteria. The methanol, chloroform and petroleum ether extracts were found to have total phenolic content of 80.2 mgGE/g, 70.48 mgGE/g and 66.28 mgGE/g respectively. The antioxidant activities of methanol, chloroform and petroleum ether leaf extracts of Ficus sycomorus were screened using 1.1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl assay. IC50 values were found to be 2.625 μg/mL, 3.242 μg/mL and 4.309 μg/mL in methanol, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether leaf extracts respectively for their antioxidant activity by DPPH assay; the lower IC50 value which showed the radical scavenge activity to be effective in this solvent extract. In the same condition methanol, chloroform and petroleum ether extract showed high antioxidant activity and oxygen free radicals scavenging abilities which were found almost equivalent to the ascorbic acid standard antioxidant activity. Thus the higher antibacterial activity of methanol extract is ±14.7to S.aureus, chloroform extract is ± 14.0 to E. coli and P.ether to ± 13.7 to K.pneumonia. Therefore the result of the study reveal that the medicinal value of the plant can be motivating issue of the researchers undertake further research as to use the plant extract as entity for modern drug discovery.
