Electrical energy is very important for the development of a country’s economy. Accordingly,
establishing large power plants requires a proper design of the generating systems. One of the big
mechanisms for generating power at power plants is using thermal power plants. In Ethiopia,
though, most power plants are hydro-based systems; thermal power plants exist in sugar industries,
the Repi waste recycling power plant, and other newly developed geothermal plants. The
methodologies for controller design development are considered as the key for drum level control
in thermal power plant and different industrial applications. for proper operation, steam-operated
power plants need a stable, high-quality of controller is performed. The study reported is on design
and simulation of fuzzy sliding mode controller for level control in thermal power plant in sugar
industry.
The main objective of this thesis is to control the steam boiler drum level using three controllers,
namely PID, sliding mode (SMC), and fuzzy chattering free fuzzy sliding mode (FSMC), to track
the desired position. PID and SMC controllers are used as reference benchmarks to compare their
Simulink results with FSMC.
K.J. Astrom and R.D. Bell's modeling approach has been used to drive the dynamic model of a
steam boiler, the tenability of the system has been analyzed using the Lyapunov method, and the
controller has been implemented using MATLAB Simulink performance analysis. The simulation
results show that the newly proposed controller has removed a chattering phenomenon and reduced
the tracking error.
Key words: PID controller, sliding mode controler (SMC), fuzzy sliding mode controller
