Abstract:
Dӓbrӓ Marqos Awurajja is found in Eastern Gojjam, and has been one resourceful region of
the country. Of these resources, cattle took the lead in Dabra marqos Awurajja.In the past,
cattle were severly affected by both pandemcs and periodic epidemcs. Of the major diseases,
Dӓsta Bӓshita, Gӓndi, Abba Sӓnga, Abba Gurba, Dӓdӓho, Ya-Wusţ Ţigeňa, Ya- Wusţ Ţigeňa,
Wezwz, Bӓrӓr, and Liyu Liyu Bӓshita were the most contagious, verial and bacterial diseases
that affected the cattle of Dӓbrӓ Marqos Awurajja.It had perished and other damage which
in turn had socio-economic implications. However, this historical realiy had never been
studied. Thus, the major objective of this thesis is toinvestigate andreconstruct the historyof
cattle diseases, ramification and its management: the case of Däbrä Marqos Awurajja,
eastern Gojjam: 1950s -1991. The study looked at the socio-economic impacts of cattle
epidemics including measures taken by community, government and international
communities and NGO to alleviate the epidemic. The study is construted by using both
primary and secondary sources. These include archives, governmental reports, articles,
journals and other published and unpublished materials. In addition, the reasercher used
oral sources from informants through interviews in different part of Dӓbrӓ Marqos Awurajja.
All data which obtained from informants hadcross-checked with archival as well as other
sources to ensure its authentcity and validity of the sources. This was made both thematically
and chronologically. The findings of this study show that a huge head of cattle in Dӓbrӓ
Marqos Awurajja were decimated by periodic cattle disease outbreaks. The problem was
aggraviated by inadequacy of medication, lack of skilled personnel, limited resource,
infrastructural facilities and political turmoil in the country at large and study area in
particular. Although the communities and the government attempted prevent, control and
eradicate these diseases since 1950s, it was eradicated (Rinderpest) only with involvements
of global eradication campaigns with great deeds of international community support. The
thesis attempts to explore community’s response, Government and International
Organization rolels. Finally, the paper tried to analyse the impacts of cattle disease in DӓbMarqos Awurajja.
