dc.description.abstract A passive optical network (PON) is a network that depends mostly on passive optical components and it reduces the cost price. Hence in this research, the MDM or Hybrid PDM and MDM system for the total of four guided modes above 40 Gbps GPON systems have been investigated. WDM has insufficient bandwidth utilization but Polarization Division Multiplexing (PDM) uses the same wavelength in different orthogonal polarization. Supporting more number of users with the appropriate transmission system by considering the capacity is the challenge in GPON system. The capacity of PON can be increased by using different multiplexing techniques. Among them hybrid PDM and Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) is one way used to increase the capacity and the number of available channels. The optical signal is distributed to the user terminal with the help of a splitter ensuring the demands of bandwidth utilization. The effect of PDM on MDM GPON results the increment of channel output. The possible accessibility of the channel is increased compared to the MDM transmission system. Parabolic indexed Multimode fiber (MMF) has been used as the channel transmission system to transmit the number of guided modes. Each guided modes haven’t the same performance at given distance and compared their performance to fit the best distance. The interference and crosstalk can be reduced using the channel spacing between the orthogonal guided modes. Performance analysis of different mode generators have been compared by varying the input power and parabolic index MMF length. LP01 mode better than other HG00, HG01 and LP11 guided modes for both MDM and the hybrid PDM-MDM GPON system. The maximum achieved distance using LP01 fundamental mode four ONU channel system is 15 km with BER, Q-factor and received power of 10 −11 , 6.8 and -62 dBm respectively. The effect of refractive index variation of each guided modes in the parabolic MMF were analyzed. The performances were compared and evaluated in terms BER, Q-factor and received power.
