Abstract:
This thesis is about the historical survey of drought and food insecurity in Lay Gayint
Worada since 1974. The study is based on archival material, interment sources, written materials
and documents and on the collection of oral traditions and informations. Archival sources in
several governmental offices in Lay Gayint Worada, South and North Gondar Zones were
consulted intensively. Considerable efforts and time was also put into the archrivals of different
Bureau in Bahir Dar. Parallel with the collection of archival data knowledgeable information's in
various qabale like Nafas Mawcha, GobGob, Sali and others were systematically interviewed. In
carrying out this work, the method of historical investigation focused on describing and
analyzing the various historical sources and this was followed by the critical analyses and
interpretations of the data as to their authority and relevance. Hence, an intensive process of
investigating and sorting out chiefly of internet and archival sources and oral tradition became
the most important component of this research.
Throughout the paper attempts have been made to give a general picture of drought and
food insecurity the in worada at various times in point. This is explaining by analyzing the
nature, the problem and the magnitude of the drought and the relief activties. Thus, drought and
food insecurity in the area took places since 1974. As a result it affected several people found in
the worada, However, this study describes the nature and the extent of the government and the
non-governmental organization interventions to bring desired changes and the related economic
and social changes and how among other things these environmental social forces combined
together work out in the overall development of the worada transforming it form food shortage to
some forms of relief.
