Background; - We say disability occurs when an individual's activities and performances in a normal environment are restricted in nature, function, or quality of performance in activity. Living with disabilities have its own impact on socio-economic status like lower level of education poor health and difficulty in employment. Despite the fact that many studies on the lived experiences of people with disabilities have been conducted around the world, there is still a significant gap between nations in a variety of areas such as culture, economic status, and the recommendation of a previous study in Ethiopia.
Objectives; - To explore the lived experiences of persons with disability living in Bahir Dar City, North-West Ethiopia, 2023.
Methods; - A phenomenological study design was employed in Bahir Dar city on 15 persons with disability from November, 15 to December, 20 2022. Heterogeneous purposive sampling technique was used to select study participants. Data was collected by using an in-depth interview. Rigor and trustworthiness of the study were maintained by transferability, dependability, credibility and conformability. The thematic analysis method was used for the development of codes and themes. Software (ATLAS. ti 7) version 7.5.6 was used for analysis.
Result; - Five major themes and fourteen sub-themes were developed that explain lived experiences of persons with disability. Physical, psychological, social, economic and coping strategy experiences were major themes. Depression and negative emotional behavior were sub- themes under psychological experiences. Unemployment with the absence of work place and inadequate income were sub-themes under the economical experiences of participants.
Conclusion; - People with disabilities in Bahir Dar reported issues such as a lack of an elevator, a steep ramp for wheelchairs at the building's gate, incorrect road use, self-care inability, fear, sucking lips, anxiety, anger, depression, feeling lonely, unemployment due to budget and COVID-19 problems, work place problems, low income, discrimination, believing disability was God's punishment, sin, the anger of idols, the evil eye, and Satan.
