Nanocomposite materials based on metal nanoparticles and graphene oxide (GO) have gained increasing attention for their wide range of potential applications in various material science fields. In this study, GO nanoparticles and reduced graphene-oxide based nanocomposite catalysts (Ag/rGO, Cu/rGO and Ag-Cu/rGO) were successfully synthesized via a simple co-reduction method. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic techniques. The Ag-Cu/rGO nanocatalyst along with NaBH4 exhibited remarkable catalytic activities towards Methylene Blue with a degradation efficiency of 100% in a short reaction time. The results indicated that high removal efficiency (99.36%) was achieved by using 2.5 mg Ag-Cu/rGO nanocomposite and 50 ppm methylene blue aqueous solution at a contact time of 6min and 100% after 6 min of time. Proximate analysis experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of initial concentration of methylene blue, contact time, and dose of Ag-Cu/rGO nanocomposite upon removal efficiency of methylene blue from the aqueous solution. The degradation reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to catalyst dosage. The kinetic apparent rate constant, kapp, of the Ag-Cu/rGO nanocomposite against MB dye reduction is 0.86556 min−1 , which is higher than that of Ag/rGO (0.18582 min−1 ) and Cu/rGO (0.50203 min−1 ) monometallic nanocomposites, which may confirm that the novel Ag-Cu/rGO nanocomposite is a promising catalyst for the application of catalytic degradation/reduction of organic dyes in industrial wastewater.
