In water distribution systems, hydraulic characteristics are crucial. The primary hydraulic performance indicators are pressure, water losses, and flow velocity in the distribution systems. These need to be studied and optimized to increase the water distribution system's perfo rmance. The overall objective of this study is to evaluate the hydraulic performance of the existing water distribution system of Aykel town, using operational steps of quantifying water loss (NRW) in the distribution system, building the hydraulic model, and evaluating the hydraulic parameters of the system with a standard permissible range. The data that was needed to achieve the objective of the study was collected from both primary and secondary sources. The Primary data was collected by observation and field measurement from the study area. The secondary data were collected from design documents, Amhara Water and Energy Bureau (AWEB), Aykel town’s Administration Municipal office, and the water and sewerage office. Microsoft Excel was used to organize, analyze and present the data collected from the field measurements and the data obtained from the office. Bentley waterGEMS CONNECT Edition 10.00.0050, was used for modeling and hydraulic analysis of the water distribution network. The hydraulic parameters, nodal pressure and flow velocity, were analyzed for the current demand conditions. The WaterGEMS Model was calibrated by adjusting the pipe roughness coefficient parameter. After pipe roughness adjusted, the calibrated model results were within the permissible range. Based on the WaterGEMS software analysis result after the model was calibrated, 12.16% of node pressure is below the minimum required, whereas 87.84% of nodes are in the recommended range of 15-70 meters during peak hour demand. During minimum demand, all pressure nodes' values are below 70m head. During peak hour demand, around 90% of the pipe velocity being less than recommended range of 0.6m/s. The reason for such low velocity is that appropriate sized pipes are not installed and there is low flow in the pipes; to address this issue, replace the pipe with the proper sizes. The total water loss from water production and consumption data is 15.04% of water production. Keywords: hydraulic performance, model calibration, non-revenue water, Aykel town, water demand
