Abstract:
Clean water in rural communities is a major problem in developing countries. The access to safe
drinking water in the rural community is occurred due to the absence potable water distribution
network. This problem causes health risks in humans. Therefore it is essential to study household
water treatment mechanisms like ceramic water filtration. To overcome water pollution at the
household level composite ceramic water filter is best solution. Clay composite ceramic filter
(BCF) fabricated from clay, charcoal, and sawdust. The materials selected were available in the
local area. The main goal of this study was to produce a low-cost filtration system using locally
available materials and to find the suitability of those materials For this study, Ceramic filters
were prepared from clay and sawdust. The study analyzed the physiochemical and biological
parameters of water quality at the household level of drinking water in rural communities. In this
study, the filter was composed of clay to sawdust ratio of 100:0,80:20,70:30,50:50 and 45:55.
Using the fabricated ceramic water filter filtration was done and the filtered water quality was
analyzed at the laboratory. A laboratory scale unit is made for study; water passed through the
filter is then collected and analyzed. The results showed that the removal efficiency of turbidity
was good using proportion of 100:0, 80:20 and 70:30 which was recorded as 91.9 ,94 and 94.2%
respectively. The bacteriological efficiency of ceramic filters increases by increasing the ratio of
clay material. But the flow rate decreases by increasing the ratio of clay material. The FC removal
efficiency shows 100%. In the study the ceramic filter produced using material proportion of 70%
clay and 30% sawdust was in both removal efficiency as well as flow rate compared to other
ceramic filter type.
