dc.description.abstract This thesis aims on analysis of RC DEBs having openings and perform parametric study on the behavior of reinforced concrete DEBs using finite element analysis software ANSYS. The parameters taken into consideration has been opening type, the size of opening, compressive strength of the concrete, hanger reinforcement, nib length, location of opening, nib depth to total depth ratio, additional reinforcement around opening, support condition and reinforcement layout. These control variables havebeen used to conduct a series of finite element analyses for the purpose of achieving theaim of this thesis. From the analysis it could be observed that the ultimate load capacity of the RC DEBs under the provision of opening reduces by 6.70%, 5.70% and 14.32% for circular, square and rectangular openings respectively but the crack starts more rapidlyin square and rectangular openings than circular openings. For the DEB type under variable opening, it is observed that the maximum opening provided in the beam is limited as 0.04m 2 or 5.6% of the DEB area. From the analysis for larger opening which shows reduction of 21.47%, 23.98% and 18.4% for circular, square andrectangular openings respectively. As the compressive strength of concrete shifts from20Mpa to 60Mpa there were 24.94% an increase in the failure load capacity. It is also concluded that hanger reinforcement and nib length play a great role in reducing of cracks producing in the re-entrant corner of the DEBs. The failure mode changed from a diagonal crack at the re-entered corner to crack through the opening as the opening was moved toward the shear-dominated region and d/H varies 0.25 to 0.75, the stress developed were decreased and similarly there were 11.98% increase in the failure load capacity. The analysis shows that strengthen of the beam using reinforcement increases the failure load by 4%-12%.
