Abstract:
Due to the rapid population growth and industrialization, the status of environment is degrading
from time to time. As the extent of Industrialization for development are extending to far flying
areas in the world as well as in Ethiopia, the problem of wastewater management is causing a great
concern to the environment. The wastewater generation from municipal and manufacturing
industry increases along with population growth.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the textile wastewater treatment plant unit efficiency
hydraulic performance using design guideline and evaluating operational protocols based on
Ethiopian Environmental Protection Agency and international wastewater effluent quality
standard.
Five sampling points were identified from Bahir Dar textile and the study was carried out on the
basis of field analysis and characterization studies. The major pollution indicating parameters like
biological oxygen demand, total dissolved solid, total suspended solid, ammonia, pH, dissolved
oxygen, nitrate, nitrite and heavy metals were analyzed in Bahir Dar institute of technology
Laboratory center.
The hydraulic residence times of primary clarifier, aeration tank and secondary clarifier is 26.4,
38.25 and 28.26 hours, respectively, which were all more than the standard value. The total
suspended solids and chemical oxygen demand effluent concentration were 60.9 and 138.46 mg/L
respectively with removal percentage 22.24 and 80.54 % respectively which were again the above
the required limit. The treatment plant pollutant removal efficiency is weak and corrective
measurements on the operating problems and configuration of the plant are recommended to
maximize the performance of the treatment plant.
