Abstract:
Drilling is the most generally perceived machining process in the world and also in our
country Ethiopia whereby the operation incorporates making round openings in metallic
and non-metallic materials. Around 75% of all metal cutting method is of the drilling
operation. The growth of Ethiopia manufacturing sector depends largely on its productivity
& quality. Multiple-spindle drilling machines are used for increasing the mass production
rate and saving of important time which are required for producing the holes with help of
drill. The aim of this thesis was to design and fabricate of multi spindle drill machine that
can drill three holes at a time up to 20 mm diameter. The material to be used for the machine
to be designed is mild steel for gears and 40C8 steel for shaft. There are two types of parts
designed and purchased parts. Process parameters have been selected for different
components, material was selected for all components and stress and force analysis for shaft
and tooth wear analysis for gears have been done for investigating the designed parts are
safe for fabricating. Then, the designed parts to be fabricated. Fastening, joining, fitting
method, drilling, smoothing, cutting, grinding method were used to fabricate this machine.
Proper available tools and equipment‟s have been used, like welding machines, grinding
machine, drilling equipment‟s. Measuring tools, testing tools, safety tools. This machine
has different components spindles, gears, bearings, bearing housing, plate and chunk. for
drilling This fabricated machine was tested experimentally on Aluminium as a target
material, the result was compared to conventional drilling machine. Comparison was made
in terms of drilling time, job handling, multiple operation possibility, quality and
productivity. The designed machine is functional and effective to drill multi hole on
targeted material.
