Power has been and is the integral part of every walk of life in the modern human history. In the
event of power transmission to appliances, transformer plays key role. As with all, if not most,
electrical devices, a transformer requires real-time monitoring and proactive protection
mechanisms to properly function and remain safe. On top of that, thievery of the equipment
phenomenon of reality befalling more often. This study, therefore, simulated a SCADA based
distribution transformer monitoring and protection system for Ethiopian Power Utility to
alleviate the aforementioned concern. The simulation demonstrates protection and monitoring of
transformer parameters namely oil temperature, winding temperature, oil level, load, voltage, and
theft protector with the help of codes, sensors and pertinent software. The codes were written
using Arduino MEGA 2560 (microcontroller) and it basically receives current values of each
parameter via the sensors, evaluated to standards, takes corrective action and displays the figures.
The code compiled in to (.hex) files and loaded to the Arduino for executions. The monitoring
and protection system consists of block diagram and circuits of all the parameters, cooling fans,
different sensors for oil level, oil temperature, winding temperature and theft detector made
using proteus (ISIS professional). The SCADA system is displayed using LABVIEW where data
reading and writing are enabled. The proteus and LABVIEW software were connected by VSPE
(virtual serial ports emulator). The overall simulation system was found to operate pretty well
with all the settings of the parameters satisfied. The system responds to normal operations and
abnormal conditions of distributed transformer under functioning. The state of each parameter
was able to monitor and protection of the distributed transformer guaranteed when conditions
went wrong.
