dc.description.abstract This thesis presents a design and simulation study of particle swarm optimization (PSO) tuned optimal sliding mode control (SMC) for induction motor (IM) used in sugar mill for a wide speed range. Most sugar mills have mechanical steam turbines but higher steam consumption but made poor efficiency, so replacing these steam turbines with electric drive will improved efficiency. Another important factor for extraction of sugarcane efficiently is the operational speed of crushers. Typically, diesel and petrol engines have speeds of 700 to 2000 rpm, while electric drives are usually rated at 1500 rpm and more with less delay time. The classical approach of designing speed controllers for vector control of induction motors (crushers) have undergone many problems like instability, rise time, settling time, overshot etc. during load disturbances. In order to overcome this problem, the PSO tuned sliding mode controller algorithm is the best solution. Generally, variable-speed drives for induction motors require both a wide operating range of speed and variable fast torque response, regardless of load variations. Sliding mode control method (SMC), which is a robust nonlinear control method creating insensibility against modeling errors, external disturbance effects and load change of the system. The performance of the proposed SMC under an integral sliding surface is done under no load; load change and external disturbance finally evaluate the performance index. Modeling of the induction motor, designing of its controller and overall analysis are performed using actual data. The simulation results presented in this thesis showed the effectiveness of the proposed method, with satisfactory response for PSO tuned SM controller. Particle swarm optimization techniques are used to optimize the parameters of the SMC controller by using a performance index. The comparison showed that the motor speed reached a settling time at 3.12sec under PID control(ITAE=2.534) but PSO tuned SMC showed that the motor speed reached a settling time at 0.05sec with min performance index (ITAE=0.345).
