The main purpose of the study was to explore the self-employment experience of persons with disabilities, in Bahir Dar city administration. To do so, a qualitative phenomenological research design was utilized. The data was collected from self-employed persons with disabilities through semi-structured interview and observation in work environment compound. Eight self-employed persons with disabilities were selected by purposive sampling strategy from the total number of self-employed persons with disabilities. The collected data were analyzed following the qualitative data analysis procedures including; organizing, reading the transcribed data, coding, developing themes representing and reporting themes and finally interpreting meaning of findings. The finding reveals that, there are very few persons with disabilities who live their lives in self-employment and many persons with disabilities have low experience to engage in self-employment. As a result, they face many challenges related with policy, stigma, lack of confidence, lack of education and training, lack of fund, customer relationships, and workplace environment. They also reduce problems and challenges by asking for a variety of support to do their job and develop their self-advocacy, self-determination and standing up for themselves. But even though they try to solve problems, they sometimes have problems with self-determination, and self-advocacy. Therefore, the government needs to made amendments in the provision of accessible services and it should also enable self-employed PwDs to be successful by providing a suitable workplace and providing financial support. |
