Abstract:
Background: Chr oni c kidney disease is defi ned as ki dney da mage or gl omer ul ar filtrati on rat e
<60 mL/ mi n/ 1. 73 m2 f or 3 mont hs or more, irrespecti ve of t he cause. Accordi ng t he 2010 Gl obal
Bur den of Di sease st udy, chr oni c ki dney disease has shifted from 27t h t o 18th cause of deat h from
1990 t o 2010. It is also a maj or but poorl y underst ood gr owi ng health bur den l eadi ng t o
si gnificant mor bi dit y and mortality i n l ow and mi ddl e i ncome countries, especi all y i n
hypertensi ve clients.
Obj ecti ve: To assess prevalence and associ ated fact ors of chroni c kidney di sease a mong
hypertensi ve patients who attend chr oni c f oll ow up cli nic at public hospitals i n Bahir Dar Cit y,
Nort hwest Et hi opi a, 2020.
Met hods: I nstitutional-based cr oss-secti onal study desi gn was conduct ed from Febr uar y
23/ 02/ 2020- March 23/ 03/2020 on public hospitals i n Bahir Dar Cit y. A t otal of 335 hypert ensi ve
patients were selected using syste matic rando m sampli ng met hod. The dat a was collected by face
to face i nterview and chart revi ew. Dat a was anal yzed usi ng SPSS version 23. Bi variate and
Multi variable l ogistic regressi on were used t o identify i ndependent predi ct ors of CKD and p val ue <=0. 05 consi dered statisticall y si gnificant.
Res ult: Of t he t otal 335 hypertensi ve patients the preval ence of chr onic ki dney di sease was
found t o be 11. 6 %. The variables t hat si gnificantl y associated wit h chr oni c ki dney disease
a mong hypertensi ve patients were mal e sex [ AOR =3. 8 (: 95 % CI: 1. 50, 9. 69)] , durati on of
hypertensi on fi ve years and above [ AOR=5. 0, 95 % CI: ( 2. 05, 12. 27)] , uncontrolled bl ood
pressure [ AOR=5. 2, 95%CI: ( 1. 98, 13. 74), negati ve attitude t owar ds chroni c ki dney disease
[ AOR= 2. 4, 95 %CI: ( 1. 05, 5. 36)] , body mass i ndex over wei ght and obese [ AOR=3. 6, 95 % CI:
(1. 48, 8. 84)] and [ AOR=11. 2, 95 %CI: (3. 27, 38. 48)] respecti vel y.
Concl usi on: I n t his study one i n t en hypertensi ve patients had CKD. Sex, durati on of
hypertensi on, body mass i ndex, bl ood pressure st at us and attitude t owar ds CKD wer e
independent predi ct ors of CKD. It is better t o gi ve f ocus on earl y det ecti on and manage ment of
CKDi n hypertensi ve patients and i ncreasi ng awareness about modifiable risk fact ors of CKD.
